Each student wishing to learn to play an instrument and become a part of the band program will visit individually with one of the band directors to determine what instrument they would like to play and what they may be best suited for. Typically this is done at the end of the preceding school year, but may be done during the course of the summer or at the beginning of the year.
We ask all students to give us a list (ranked in order) of three instruments they may be interested in playing. It is important to understand that just because a brother, sister or parent played a certain instrument, that doesn't necessarily mean that is the instrument they should play or will be successful on. Many factors go into this decision including interest level, physical make-up, and needs of the band.
Certain sections such as percussion (drums) and saxophones will be very limited due to their enormous popularity. We simply can't make a band out of nothing but percussion and saxophone players.
Instruments that we most often start beginning students on include the Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Baritone/Euphonium, Tuba, and Percussion. |
