Rex Currie was inducted in the Texas AG Teacher Association Hall of Fame as a first ballot Hall of Famer in Corpus Christi, Texas on July 24th.
This is the highest honor of the association and eligibility requires not only a nominator, but at least 25 years of service and exceptional achievement and impact on Texas Agriculture and the profession of AG Education.
Few people could measure their impact and find themselves comparable to Rex Currie. Over the course of a fifty year career Mr. Currie taught at one school, Warren High School, and over time Warren FFA and Rex Currie became so synonymous that it was hard to think of one without the other. Throughout his career Mr. Currie made impacts with every person he came into contact with. In teaching thousands of students, he impacted generations of students, several times he taught students whose parents and grandparents had also been through his program. Mr. Currie was an engaging educator who is well renowned as a subject matter expert. I’ve heard it said that Ag teachers are expected to be jacks of all trades, but masters of none, Mr. Currie beats that quote, because he literally became a master of many disciplines including soil stewardship, parliamentary procedure, livestock and meats evaluation, and most notably Forestry.
The classroom alone measures but a small part of his legacy, Mr. Currie led numerous state championship quality teams most notably winning multiple state Senior Chapter Conducting titles , and more than a dozen State Forestry titles, frequently placing two teams in the top 10 in the state. In addition, Mr. Currie was a founding member of the current version of the Tyler County Fair Board, and played a part, in literally millions of dollars going to support young people pursuing agriculture in Tyler County. He is a lifetime member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, was honored with an honorary American and Honorary Lonestar from National and Texas FFA respectively.
