Nutrition and Exercise Fuel Growing Bodies and Brains
March is National Nutrition Month. This year’s theme is “Food Connects Us.” So it's a great time to connect with your child and talk about healthy eating and the foods that nourish bodies and brains.
But not only do kids need to eat right, they also need adequate exercise. Without it, they get cranky, stressed and sleepy. And research shows that exercise has a positive effect on learning. Children get more exercise when their families get involved. So encourage your family to turn off the screen devices and get moving together.
Here are some fun ways to exercise with your child:
Have a jump rope contest.
Take a dog for a brisk walk.
Turn on the radio and move to the music.
Walk 10 times down the block or up and down the stairs.
Play a game of tag or kickball.
Go in-line skating or bike riding.
Take a hike.
Host a neighborhood bike, car or dog wash.
Shoot some basketball hoops.
Do some spring cleaning—washing, waxing, sweeping.
Knead some dough to make homemade bread.
Work out with a kids' exercise video.
Plant a garden.
