Help Your Child Learn to Be a Good Sport

Sports and sportsmanship should go hand in hand. But sometimes, kids believe they have a right to break the rules as long as they win the game.

Teaching children sportsmanship is one way to help them build important social skills. To be good sports, children need the ability to:

  • Win without gloating.

  • Lose without complaining.

  • Treat their opponents and the officials with respect.

These skills benefit children in the classroom and in the family room as well as on the playing field.

To instill good sportsmanship and a sense of fair play, remind your child that good sports:

  • Always abide by the rules of the game.

  • Share the responsibilities of the team.

  • Give everyone a chance to play according to the rules.

  • Always play fair.

  • Follow the directions of the coach.

  • Respect the other team's effort.

  • Offer encouragement to teammates.

  • Accept the judgment calls of the game officials.

  • End the game smoothly.
