Tell the Teacher If Schoolwork is a Struggle for Your Child

Is your child struggling regularly when doing assignments at home? You don't have to solve the problem alone.

Contact your child's teacher. Discuss your concerns. Does your child refuse to do assignments? Is your student unable to finish them? Are the instructions unclear? Even if you don't know what the problem is, let the teacher know your child is having difficulty.

Ask the teacher to work with you to develop a plan to solve or lessen the problem. Perhaps your child needs:

  • Extra help from a teacher or tutor to catch up.

  • A schedule to make up missed assignments.

  • Adjustments in assignments to accommodate a learning disorder.

  • To pay more attention in class when assignments are being made.

  • Extra assignments to provide more challenge.

  • More variety in assignments.

  • Help with English.

Then, agree with the teacher on a schedule to follow up and evaluate whether your plan is working.
